Hemorrhoids Symptoms And Treatment Hemorrhoids are actually varicose veins in the anus and rectum. They occur when blood vessels that are either inside the anus or around it become swollen. Hemorrhoids (also known as haemorrhoids, emerods, or piles) are swollen blood vessels in and around the anus that cause itching, pain, and sometimes bleeding. They can be particularly uncomfortable and painful if left untreated.

The definitive cause of hemorrhoids cannot be determined, however its' probably pretty much certain that the warnings you received as a child to not sit on that hot radiator or the cold floor is not the reason that you may be suffering now!

However, it is often thought that our very posture as "upright" human beings has a distinct bearing on the occurrence of hemorrhoids as it forces a great deal of pressure on the veins in the anus.

Other suggested causes include:

• Natural ageing

• Constipation, or the reverse, diarrhoea

• Reading for prolonged periods whilst sitting on the toilet

• Pregnancy

• Straining during bowel movements

• It may be hereditary

All of these can lead to the tissues supporting the veins to stretch, and, as a result of this the walls of the vein become thin and can bleed. If this stretching and pressure continues this will lead the weakened veins to protrude.

You may then notice some or all of the following symptoms; the discovery of sensitive lumps in or around the anus, pain or itching around the anus, bleeding and protrusion when moving your bowels. All of which can be both painful and embarrassing.

There are two types of hemorrhoids:

• External hemorrhoids

• Internal hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids form around the edge of the anus and are covered by sensitive skin. It may well be that a blood clot forms in one of them and a painful swelling will develop. The external hemorrhoid will feel like a hard but sensitive lump and will bleed if ruptured. Internal hemorrhoids develop within the anus beneath the lining. An internal hemorrhoid can cause severe pain if it is completely "prolapsed", i.e., protruding from the anus and cannot be pushed back inside.

At this point it is strongly recommended that you seek medical advice to ensure a quick and easy relief to the problem rather than "suffer in silence" as so many people, especially men, are prone to do.

The prevention of hemorrhoids can be helped by looking closely at your lifestyle. Here are some of the main things you should look at to help avoid hemorrhoids:

• Drink more fluids

• Strive for a diet that is high in fibre

• Take regular exercise

• Avoid straining when moving your bowels

• Avoid highly refined foods such as white bread, rice and cakes, etc.

• Avoid long periods of either sitting or standing.

These are some of the main precautions you can take to help avoid the development or onset of hemorrhoids, most of which can be easily achieved even in today’s hectic lifestyle. Far better to make an effort now and avoid the problem rather than spend time later trying to rectify it.

The very notion of drinking more fluids is really a vital part of all exercise and diet regimes but its’ a great idea anyway as so many of us remain dehydrated without knowing it. So, if you can incorporate drinking more fluids into your daily routine you will be doing yourself a favour in so many ways.

Regarding diet, you should try and eat foods that are rich in fibre as much as possible. Try and include whole grain breads and cereals, beans, fresh or lightly cooked fruits and vegetables, brown rice and other grains, nuts and seeds. If you cannot fit these foods into your diet, you should try and add bran (widely available in supermarkets) to your food whenever possible.

Finally, to try and avoid making hemorrhoids any worse, suffers should avoid using laxatives and should strictly limit time spent straining when moving their bowels.

Of course, it goes without saying that if you have any suspicions that you are developing hemorrhoids you should see you own doctor and check with him regarding your continued diet.
