If you are suffering from external hemorrhoids, you know just how miserable they can feel!

If you have external hemorrhoids, they will be outside the anus instead of inside. It may feel like a hard lump if a swollen vein in the area ruptures. Then a blood clot forms. This is very uncomfortable because if you have an exterior hemorrhoid, walking may be painful. Going to the bathroom can also be painful as well. The area can become extremely irritated and sore.

As miserable as external hemorrhoids can feel, many people have them. So you are not alone in your misery.

There may be a genetic basis to developing hemorrhoids as they seem to run in families. So if your father or mother have them, be careful to do those things that are necessary to protect yourself from getting them too. For example, be sure to get enough exercise, eat plenty of fiber and drink a lot of water.

External hemorrhoids are treated differently than internal hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids usually aren't that uncomfortable. But external ones can be very irritating.

A common treatment for external hemorrhoids is surgery, but you can wait for a while before you have your doctor operate on your hemorrhoids. That's because they just may go away by themselves if your body is able to absorb the blood clots involved in external hemorrhoids. And there are certain natural remedies that you can use to help yourself — like sitting in a tub of hot water for a period of time on a regular basis and using creams and ointments designed for hemorrhoids sufferers.

But a number of health professionals think it's usually best to have a doctor removes the blood clots. If you do decide to have surgery, your doctor may cut a small incision into the hemorrhoid. Then he can squeeze out the blood clot. However, that method may not be effective in all cases and he may decide to remove the blood vessels within the hemorrhoids as well — which may be a more permanent solution to your problem.

This surgical procedure involves a period of time for you to recuperate. During your healing time you've got to be very careful not to become constipated. So watch what you eat and drink a lot of water. Your stools need to be soft especially during this healing time. And they need to remain soft to help you not to develop more hemorrhoids in the future.

External hemorrhoids are no fun, but help is available. Of course, your best choice is to avoid developing hemorrhoids so that you don't have to treat them. So drink a lot of water. Exercise regularly. Don't sit too long at one time. And don't forget to include enough fiber with your meals.
