If you have ever noticed varicose veins on a woman's legs, that will give you an idea of what hemorrhoids are like. It's similar to having varicose veins of the rectum or anus. Although it's an extremely unpleasant condition, it's very common.

You might be wondering what causes hemorrhoids. There are a number of factors that contribute to the development of hemorrhoids including lifting heavy weights, suffering from ongoing constipation, sitting too much, long and violent coughing bouts, giving birth to a baby, and persistent diarrhea.

If you bleed after you have a bowel movement, that could be a symptom of hemorrhoids. Itching and sensitivity around the anus are also symptoms.

There are two different kinds of hemorrhoids. There are internal ones that hardly ever itch or hurt and there are external hemorrhoids that cause a lot of trouble. They can itch and burn and become extremely painful. Obviously the external hemorrhoids are outside the anus and the internal ones are within the body.

To protect yourself from developing hemorrhoids, be sure to drink a lot of water so that you do not become constipated. Also don't forget to include enough fiber in your diet as well. Avoid spending too much time sitting on the toilet as that puts strain on that sensitive area. So don't bring a book with you or puzzles to do while you're in the restroom. Be sure to get enough exercise and don't sit for long stretches at a time.

There are some things you can do if you already have hemorrhoids that will make them worse. One of the worst things you can do is to let your stools get hard and dry by not drinking enough water and eating enough fiber.

Hemorrhoids can be treated by natural means at home and they're also treated through surgery if they are severe enough.

Treatments you can do at home include taking sitz baths in warm water in your bath tub, applying ice packs to the area, which can ease the pain and swelling. You can use a cream with a witch hazel base to calm the irritation around the inflamed area.

You can also purchase over-the-counter medications to help treat hemorrhoids. But you need to know that this type of medication may not be very effective. It's more of a short-term solution instead of a long-term one.

If your hemorrhoids are severe, there are surgical procedures that may help you. Surgery for your hemorrhoids is only recommended in extreme cases. You can even use local anesthetics to ease the discomfort for a short period of time. There are products that can help make your blood vessels become smaller and reduce the swelling as a result. There are also products you can put on the area that will protect the sensitive area from being irritated further.

There are other treatments available that are not mentioned in this article as well. You need to check with your doctor to see which one is the most effective choice for you.
